|Veteran NRK Broadcaster Retiring|
|There are few people and surely only one broadcaster, in the Chiemgau Arena who can boast that they were at the biathlon competitions at the 1976 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck; NRK’s Jon Herwig Carlsen. Carlsen, the voice of biathlon in Norway for 45 years is wrapping up his biathlon career with these World Championships and the World Cup final next week in Khanty Mansiysk.
Dean of Biathlon Broadcasters
Carlsen is the dean of broadcasters when it comes to biathlon. He has told the story of countless biathlon competitions since 1976. The genial 75-year-old has the memories and stories to back up his record. He recalled those early days of biathlon on television, when the productions were much simpler. “In 76, they had five or six cameras and we were sitting in the cross-country stadium about a kilometer away so we could not see the targets. We had a man at the shooting range sending us the information over walkie-talkies which did not work. Of course the viewers did not expect so much then.”
Beside the competitions, Carlsen cherishes his many acquaintances in the sport, especially the athletes counting Liv Grete and Raphael Poiree as well as his all-time favorite Ole Einar Björndalen among them. Emil Hegle Svendsen praised Carlsen as the person “who brings biathlon to the people.”
