|“Victory goes to the swiftest” is how the old saying goes, but they were not talking about biathlon. The fastest biathlete with bad skis has little or no chance to be on the podium, let alone on the top rung. The best skis, with the perfect preparation are crucial to success on the tracks.
Three Fast Women
Belarusian Darya Domracheva, Germany’s Magdalena Neuner and Finland’s Kaisa Mäkäräinen are the three fastest women on the E.ON IBU World Cup Biathlon circuit. Their skis, like everyone else’s are meticulously prepared for each competition. Fast skis allow the most talented and best trained athletes to be at the top of their game every time they start.
Domracheva commented on the importance of fast, well prepared skis. “About 80% of my success is due to the ski preparation. In a season when Domracheva has regularly shown blinding speed, the Biathlonworld.com TV crew spent time in Kontiolahti with the Head Wax Technician for the Belarusian team Olivier Gonon. He prepares Domracheva’s skis, which have carried her to victory three times this season and on the podium in each of the past seven competitions.
Gonon and Domracheva talk about ski selection and preparation in the following video, “Fast Skis for a Fast Biathlete.”
